“Working with B Squared enables our school to bring learning to life and celebrate achievements. This benefits all of our staff, families and students.
Teachers set targets and share them with the class team. They can then evidence live in lessons when they see opportunities to capture students’ learning – either with photos, video or scanned work. Wow moments can be tagged and celebrated.
We are also now able to report termly on subject coverage and progress, as well as providing levels at which each student is working.”

Bringing learning to life and celebrating achievements
Lancaster School is a Key Stage 3 and 4 school for students who have severe learning difficulties. Based in Southend, the school has 13 classes with 130 students aged 14-19. The majority of students have difficulty with communication and many need additional social and emotional support. The school’s aim is to provide safe, meaningful, relevant, appropriate and stimulating learning opportunities to prepare its students for their future.
According to Deputy Head, Nathan Cresswell, “We started working with B Squared 10 years ago, when looking at ways to assess students effectively. The company’s Connecting Steps assessment software has made it much easier to set baselines and track student progress across a range of different assessment frameworks. Its evidence of learning tool, Evisense has really helped us improve communication with parents and how we share assessment information.”
Assessment is much clearer for staff
“B Squared’s Connecting Steps assessment software enables us to track the progress of all our pupils in one system, even though we are using a range of different assessment frameworks. These include Early Steps for children on the EYFS curriculum and Engagement Steps for those who are not yet engaged in subject specific learning. Progression Steps is used for pupils working from pre-key stage standards up towards lower GCSE grades.”
Evisense brings learning to life
“Evisense has helped us to bring our students’ learning to life. We can quickly and easily share video and photo evidence to celebrate achievements with parents and the student. Teachers can communicate with home much more easily using Evisense and this has proved to be much better than the previous home/school communication books. Teachers can provide additional information to parents efficiently by responding via the app. Parents now send photos of students learning in the home/community environment too. Also, some students have requested access to their Evisense record so they can check on their own learning – which is fantastic!”
Continually improving the user experience
“The B Squared support team is extremely responsive and has worked hard to improve our user experience even more. This has led to additional assessment frameworks being added, such as the Sounds of Intent music framework, and new features such as enabling parents to comment on reports in Evisense.”
“Working with B Squared enables us to put the student at the centre of their learning. It’s really great to see the teacher and parent comments made against the learning that happens both in the classroom and out in the community.”
