Two new free assessment frameworks for schools in Scotland

assessment frameworks for schools in Scotland

We’ve added two new free frameworks to Connecting Steps for schools in Scotland: Developing the Young Workforce and
Skills for Learning, Life and Work.

Both are based on Education Scotland guidance. Both work in Connecting Steps and Evisense, so you can track pupils’ progress and collect evidence in one place.

Developing the Young Workforce

This free framework is based on Education Scotland’s Career Education Standard (3–18) ‘I can’ statements. The statements describe what learners can do as they learn about the world of work. They range from talking about the jobs people do in their community to preparing CVs, applications and interviews.

Education Scotland describes the statements as a starting point for talking with learners about what success could look like. Track each learner’s progress in Connecting Steps. Then use Evisense to record those conversations, and the progress that follows, by linking photos, videos and observations to the statements as evidence.

The statements cover:

  • Skills
  • Ambitions
  • Enterprise
  • Preparing for work

Levels:

  • Early Level
  • First Level
  • Second Level
  • Broad General Education
  • Senior Phase

Skills for Learning, Life and Work

Skills for Learning, Life and Work are the skills Curriculum for Excellence aims to develop in every learner, from pre-school to college. They are set out in Education Scotland’s Building the Curriculum 4. These skills aren’t taught as a separate subject. They run through all the experiences and outcomes, and every practitioner shares responsibility for developing them.

This free framework is linked to Steps to Excellence. The assessments you already make in Steps to Excellence now also show how each learner is developing these skills, so there’s nothing extra to assess.

These skills can be hard to evidence, especially for learners working in small steps. The framework gives you a clear way to plan for them and show progress for every learner.

Areas covered:

  • Literacy across learning
  • Numeracy across learning
  • Thinking skills across learning
  • Health and wellbeing across learning
  • Personal learning planning and career management
  • Working with others
  • Leadership
  • Physical co-ordination and movement
  • Enterprise and employability

Evidence progress with Evisense

Evisense

Evidencing progress is a big part of Curriculum for Excellence, so all our schools in Scotland use Connecting Steps and Evisense together. Connecting Steps helps teachers show progress, plan next steps and see the whole-school picture. Evisense is our easy-to-use evidence of learning platform, where staff capture and share evidence, linking it to the statements in Connecting Steps.

The two work together and share users, groups and pupils, so they’re easy to manage. In Connecting Steps you can see which skills have evidence linked to them, and view evidence by subject, attainment level and assessment point.
