“B Squared has played a vital role in supporting the progress of our SEN learners! We use a range of assessment frameworks to meet different needs, from academic and life skills to EAL and phonics, while keeping all our data in one place. This means we can compare and analyse all progress relevant to each child, set personalised targets that reflect their individual starting points, and clearly evidence the impact of our support.”

Growing our school with a consistent approach to assessment
ALP Nuneaton is an independent SEN school in the West Midlands for learners aged 6-16+. It has grown significantly, with 86 learners now on roll and nearing capacity. Tailored 1:1 and small-group teaching meets learners’ complex individual needs, helping them develop academically, socially and personally.
According to Assistant Headteacher ‘Achievement’, Aimee Stephens, “We have used
B Squared’s Connecting Steps to track learner progress since ALP Nuneaton opened five years ago. Throughout this time, it has enabled us to accurately record and monitor learner data across a broad and diverse range of needs. This gives us a reliable way of measuring individual progress over time, which helps staff to understand each learner’s development and identify where further support or intervention may be required.”
Tracking academic and personal development
“Working with B Squared has made a significant difference to how we monitor and evidence learner progress. It gives us one system for tracking both academic and wider personal development. We can identify strengths and areas for development. As the school has grown, this has helped us keep a consistent assessment approach and provide clear evidence of the impact of our support.”
Understanding needs and celebrating progress
“Connecting Steps has helped our teachers to better understand each learner’s individual progress and needs. It supports staff to plan appropriate activities and adapt their teaching based on individual starting points, so classroom learning is purposeful, personalised and responsive to each learner and their EHCP. Teachers have a clear and manageable way to record achievements, identify gaps and plan next steps. Celebrating progress is part of everyday school life, giving learners a clearer sense of achievement in both academic and wider life skills.”
Saving time with one centralised system
“Having a centralised system that can grow to meet our needs reduces the time and administration involved in tracking learner progress. This year, we have expanded our use of the software to include the EAL and Phonics for Pupils with SEN frameworks. We are also exploring Maths for Life and a post-16+ pathway to support learners as they move towards greater independence and preparation for adulthood.”
Personalised targets from every starting point
“We can accurately baseline each learner using Connecting Steps and set personalised targets that reflect their individual starting points and needs. This enables us to ensure that targeted interventions are taking place, monitor their impact and track progress over time. We have seen many learners continue to exceed our expectations!”
